The Life & Legacy of Deacon Eddie D. Harris
Mr. Eddie D Harris a.k.a “Eddie D” was born September 18, 1937 to the late Reverend John D. Harris and Rosa Mae Harris in Albany Dougherty County Georgia. He was educated in the Dougherty County School System, attending Monroe High School, joining the United States Navy shortly thereafter in 1955.
Joining the United States Navy in 1955 allowed him the opportunity to travel the world, serving as a cook, and learning to prepare various foods. He dedicated 23 ½ years of service.
In 1962 he wed the late Emily Harris, and they became the parents of two adult children, Darryl and Kendra Harris. He became a father and a mentor to his children and grandchildren, and became a dear friend and special grand-parent to Rashad Harris.
As time permitted, “Eddie D” dedicated his life to Christ at Union Baptist Church, under the leadership of Reverend J.A. Severson. He later joined the Deacon Ministry in 2018, and became a dedicated Deacon, and also served on various church committees including the Kitchen Committee, Finance Committee, and many Food Drives.
“Eddie D” loved spending time with his family and friends, especially for family dinners. He enjoyed reading and studying his bible, attending church, playing golf, fishing, listening to music, cooking and watching sports. He was an awesome cook.
After retiring from the U.S. Navy in 1978, he is known to have been employed as a Supervisor with Turner Job Corps, and Golf Maintenance at Turner Field Golf Course.
He is preceded in death by his brother: Wilbert Harris.
Left to cherish memories of a lifetime are his children Retired Navy Veteran Darryl Harris of Albany, GA, Kendra Hunter of Albany, Ga, His sisters Janice Williams of Albany, GA. Rosalyn “Roz” Coney of Albany, GA. Valerie Harris of Fort Myers, Fla. Grandchildren: Rashad Harris of Jacksonville, Fla., Jalan and Camren Hunter of Albany, GA. N’ysa Harris of Philadelphia, PA., Great Grand-daughter: Harmony Harris of VA. Willie Pearl Harris (oldest living Aunt) of Albany, Ga. He leaves memories to a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
