Mr. Edward Irvin

Edward, a devoted servant of God, family and community was born on November 27, 1946, in Savannah, Georgia.  He was the fourth of five children to Richard and Lottie Lee Irvin. Even as a young boy, he carried a gentle spirit and a strong sense of responsibility — qualities that stayed with him throughout his life. 

After graduating from Tompkins High School in 1964, Edward went on to serve his country in the United States Army in July 1970.  He was proud of his service, and in his spare time, he played on the Army basketball team — a reminder of his lifelong love of sports and competition.  

Edward’s work ethic was unmatched. Following his military service, Edward built a diverse and accomplished career. He began at Great Dane, where he became the first African American male to operate the shear equipment during a time of segregation. He understood the significance of this responsibility and carried it with pride, knowing his work would help open doors for others. He understood the weight of that moment. Over the years, he worked in the transportation industry as a truck driver, auto & diesel mechanic, and various other skilled roles that showcased his skill and determination.  

Edward later joined R&L Carriers, where he served as an Auto Mechanic Supervisor.  He found his true professional home at this company for 25 years until his medical retirement in May 2025. Edward believed deeply in safety — not as a rule, but as a responsibility.  He valued his work and was committed to maintaining the highest standards of safety for drivers, mechanics, and all employees. He often emphasized the importance of ensuring that everyone returned home safely to their families each day. His dedication to safety and responsibility was unwavering. He took that mission personally, and he lived it every day.   

Edward’s life was marked by meaningful relationships he cherished. Prior to his military service, he shared a relationship with Ms. Mildred Coney, and from this union, his daughter Serena Irvin and son Raphael Watson was born. After relocating to Atlanta, he married Deborah Billingslea, and together they welcomed their daughter Candace Irvin. He later met and married Kathy Howard, with whom he shared 25 years of marriage until her passing on July 22, 2018.  Their bond was strong, rooted in faith, service, and mutual devotion.   

Faith was central to Edward’s life. In the early 2000s, he became an active member of Church of the Harvest International in Jonesboro, GA. He served on the Usher Board, volunteered with hospitality ministries, fed the homeless, supported senior members, and participated in the men’s ministry. He didn’t just attend church — he lived his faith. He believed in helping people, lifting them up, and being present when it mattered.  His faith was central to his life, and he cherished being spiritually fed and active in his church community. 

Edward had many joys in life. He was a true foodie, a lover of Westerns, and a man who took great pride in his lawn — so much so that he earned community awards for his landscaping. He loved repairing cars and tractor trailers, tackling DIY projects, traveling, reading his Bible, preaching the Word, and spending time with his family. He enjoyed sports, whether he was watching or playing, and he always found a way to stay active and engaged. 

Though he was naturally introverted, Edward was witty, kind-hearted, intelligent, and dependable. He was the person you could call at any hour — the one who would show up, lend a hand, offer wisdom, or simply listen.  He cared deeply, and he showed it through action.  Above all, Edward was devoted to his family and friends. He was known for consistently checking on immediate family members, ensuring everyone felt supported and cared for. He was an excellent provider, a protector, and a steady presence for those he loved. 
Edward Irvin lived a purpose-driven life marked by faith, humility, and unwavering dedication to others. He leaves behind a legacy of strength, compassion, and quiet leadership. His legacy of service, love, faith, and dedication will forever remain in the hearts of all who knew him. 

Today, we honor him. Today, we thank God for him. And today, we carry his legacy forward. 
Edward was preceded in death by his beloved wife Kathy Howard, and his brothers Herman Lee Irvin, Arthur Lee Irvin, and Willie Irvin. 
He leaves to cherish his memory: His sister Gloria Jenkins of Savannah, GA; His children Serena Anderson (Savannah, GA), Candace Irvin (Atlanta, GA), and Raphael Watson (Savannah, GA); His granddaughter Nicquaila Irvin (Savannah, GA); His grand fur baby Mr. Pickles Irvin (Atlanta, GA); His great grandkids Alexander (AJ) Thomas and Alyse Thomas (Savannah, GA); A host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, church family, coworkers and friends who loved him dearly.
